Materuni is one of the most visited sites in the Kilimanjaro region, known for its natural beauty and authenticity. Home to the Chagga tribe, the third largest ethnic group in Tanzania, Materuni has remained a genuine tribal village to this day, offering the visiter a glimpse of the local people as they go about their daily lives.
Your tour will begin at the village office where you will need to register before being allowed to enter the area.
Once the formalities are completed, you will start your walk through the village and across the beautiful landscapes of the Kilimanjaro foothills as you head towards the waterfalls. During this short but scenic hike (approximately 30 to 40 minutes), your local guide will tell you all about the Chagga lifestyle and traditions as well as inform you about the flora and fauna present in the area. The views here are breath taking and on a clear day, you may even be lucky enough to catch sight of the snow-covered peek of Mount Kilimanjaro.
Upon arrival at the waterfalls, you will be able to admire their beauty and height (150 meters) while taking a dip in the cool waters and enjoying the refreshing air of the Tanzanian forest. Once you are rested and refreshed, you will slowly head back to the village where you will be served a traditional Chagga lunch by your host and be offered a taste of the local banana beer.
Following your meal, your tour will continue with the visit of a local coffee plantation where you will learn how coffee is grown and produced, while partaking in a traditional coffee ceremony. The villagers will be singing and dancing as they grind and roast the coffee beans and you will have the opportunity to sing and dance along with them as they show you how to prepare your own coffee from bean to cup. Before saying goodbye to your hosts and returning to Moshi, you will be able to drink the coffee that you prepared as well as buy some coffee beans if you wish to support the locals of Materuni village.
