Olpopongi Maasai Village Tour (1 or 2 Days)
A trip to Northern Tanzania would not be complete without encountering the enchanting Maasai people!
The most well-known tribe in Africa – the Maasai – are warriors who continue to practice their ancestral way of life to this day. Known for their pastoral traditions, living off their herds of cattle, sheep, goats, and donkey, the Maasai were traditionally a nomadic people, always in search of water and pasture for their herds.
Olpopongi is an authentic Maasai village (boma) with a museum and overnight facilities where you can meet and interact with the tribesmen, woman and children who live in the adjacent boma. You will see a traditional singing and dancing ceremony and get a guided tour of the boma while learning about the Maasai culture and history.
Your day will also include a 3 to 4 hour walking safari through the surrounding Maasai lands where you will learn about Maasai hunting techniques, the Maasai natural medicine made from the medicinal plants that you will see on your walk, and about the wildlife commonly seen in the area (zebra, giraffe, buffalo, gazelle and antelope).
Choosing to visit Olpopongi also means that you will be supporting the local Maasai families by providing water, food, employment, personal income, medical treatments and education.
This tour was created as a day trip leaving from Moshi, but if you wish to extend your adventure and stay in the Maasai village overnight, it can be arranged for an extra cost ($180 per person in total for the full excursion with overnight stay in a traditional Maasai mud hut and all meals included).
